About
Domenico Lovascio is Associate Professor of English Literature and Culture in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Genoa.
He is a scholar of early modern English studies, especially focusing on theatre history, textual editing, the canon of John Fletcher and his collaborators, Shakespeare’s Roman plays, Anglo-Italian relationship, classical reception, and lost plays.
In 2023 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in recognition of his contribution to historical scholarship.
In 2020, he received the Ben Jonson Discoveries Award for outstanding contribution to The Ben Jonson Journal.
He has published extensively in early modern studies. In 2024, he received the 'Mariangela Tempera' Book Prize for Early Modern Studies from the Italian Association of Shakespearean and Early Modern Studies (IASEMS) for his book John Fletcher's Rome: Questioning the Classics, published in the Revels Plays Companion Library series (Manchester UP, 2022).

Professor Lovascio is also author of and Un nome, mille volti. Giulio Cesare nel teatro inglese della prima età moderna (Carocci, 2015), as well as editor of The False One (Manchester UP, 2022) by John Fletcher and Philip Massinger and of Thierry and Theodoret (Manchester UP, 2024) by Fletcher, Massinger and Nathan Field for the Revels Plays series.
His first monograph on the portrayal of Julius Caesar in early modern English drama — based on his prize-winning PhD thesis — received two national prizes in 2016 (Premio Scriviamo Insieme and Premio speciale della giuria Franz Kafka Italia), was the runner-up for another in 2018 (Premio Lago Gerundo), and was shortlisted for two more in 2016 and 2017 (Premio I Murazzi and Premio Firenze).
In 2016 he was a Visiting Scholar at Sheffield Hallam University. His research has been supported by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, the Malone Society, and the European Society for the Study of English. He is the Coordinator of the Genoa research unit within the PRIN 2017 ‘Classical Receptions in Early Modern English Drama’ (P.I. Silvia Bigliazzi, University of Verona).
Professor Lovascio is the Italian advisor to the Oxford edition of The Complete Works of John Marston, a member of the editorial board of Shakespeare (the journal of the British Shakespeare Association), a contributor to the Lost Plays Database, and a contributing editor The Collected Works of Thomas Kyd and the forthcoming Collected Plays of Robert Greene.
He has published the first Italian edition of Ben Jonson’s Catiline His Conspiracy (ECIG, 2011), the essay collections Antony and Cleopatra: A Critical Reader (Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare, 2019) and Roman Women in Shakespeare and His Contemporaries (Medieval Institute Publications/De Gruyter, 2020), and a special issue of Shakespeare on 'Shakespeare: Visions of Rome'. His research has also appeared or is forthcoming in such journals as Shakespeare Quarterly, Shakespeare Survey, English Literary Renaissance, Renaissance Studies, Early Theatre, Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England and Notes and Queries, and he has contributed to major studies such as Julius Caesar: A Critical Reader (2016) and A Companion to the Cavendishes (2020).
Professor Lovascio is currently at work on a number of research projects:
- A critical edition of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar for Cambridge Shakespeare Editions (Cambridge UP) with Andrea Peghinelli;
- A special issue of The Ben Jonson Journal celebrating the quatercentenary of John Fletcher's death;
- A critical edition of Robert Greene’s Orlando Furioso for The Collected Plays of Robert Greene (gen. ed. Darren Freebury-Jones);
- A critical edition of John Fletcher's Women Pleased for the Revels Plays series (Manchester UP) with Michela Compagnoni;
- The first Italian translation of William Caxton’s Fables of Poge the Florentine for a volume on the facetiae tradition in Europe from antiquity to the Renaissance, in which he also acts as the editor of the English section (also including first Italian translations of A Hundred Merry Tales by Michela Compagnoni and Thomas Dekker and George Wilkins’s Jests to Make You Merry by Cristiano Ragni);
- The reception of the classics in the canon of John Fletcher and his collaborators.

Professor Lovascio would welcome the opportunity to speak to any prospective graduate students interested in the following areas of study:
- the reception of the Roman past in early modern drama
- the plays in the canon of John Fletcher and his collaborators;
- textual editing;
- lost plays,
- Anglo-Italian relationships.
